Shane Stewart Posts Two Top-10 Finishes in Stockton
Mooresville, N.C. — Shane Stewart and Larson Marks Racing remain the World of Outlaws sprint car series point leaders following a double-header weekend at the Stockton (Calif.) Dirt Track. Stewart who finished second in one of the closest finishes in the series history Friday, followed it with a late-race charge into the top 10 on Saturday.
Friday’s finish was a controversial one with video footage of the checkered flag causing many to think that Stewart had, in fact, won rather than Donny Schatz. However, the scoring line was in a different location than the finish line altering the outcome of the race.
Stewart, showing class, accepted the defeat with a post on Twitter thanking the fans for the outpouring of support but stating “we got beat fair and square”.
On Saturday, Stewart was the 35th driver to qualify on a track that had greatly slowed down through the course of hot laps and qualifications. He turned the 17th-fastest lap, missing the heat inversion by one.
In his heat race, an unfortunate slide over the track’s cushion caused him to fall to the back of the field and finish eighth, sending him and the LMR No. 2 to the Last Chance Showdown (LCS).
Stewart won the LCS and started 17th in the 30-lap feature event. By midway, he had moved into 12th place, and on a restart, made an amazing charge to fifth. With just 10 laps remaining, another restart saw Stewart fall a few positions to eighth, where he ultimately finished.
Stewart and the Larson Marks Racing team continue to lead the WoO standings by 18 over Schatz.
The Larson Marks Racing team will next compete with the World of Outlaws sprint car series at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif. on Saturday and at Antioch (Calif.) Speedway on Sunday.
