Yoshihara is all smiles after securing pole position, 2024 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Road America

Pit+Paddock Civic Type R TCR Secures Second Consecutive Podium at 2024 IMSA Road America

Team ENEOS is really starting to hit their stride in the 2024 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series. ENEOS ambassador Dai Yoshihara utilized his TC America racing experience to pilot the Pit+Paddock Civic Type R TCR to pole position during qualifying; Wittmer brought it home with a P3 finish, the team’s second consecutive podium following a successful Canadian round.

Yoshihara had a smooth start, and kept the lead going early on despite competitors who weren’t far behind. Although the Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai snuck past him at the 1:24 mark, he quickly sped back ahead before the dive at turn 1. However, the order soon reversed since his pass was executed under the first full course caution caused by track debris.

Regardless, the double yellow flags were a perfect reason to get into the pits, where Wittmer jumped into action with fuel and fresh tires. Returning to the race in P8, Hyundai racers led the top three positions, however, teams were left with the critical strategic refueling decision: either a one-stop move or take the risk of losing positioning by making it two. Most chose the latter, including Wittmer, who returned for a short burst at 0:42 and went back out in P7.

With 16 minutes remaining, the safety car was brought out again after an incident left broken suspension components littered on the rumble strips, making it look like those who opted for the one-stop refuel had chosen the right strategy. But as the white flag waved, attrition began: Wittmer climbed up to P4 after two competitors ran out of fuel. On a track that makes it difficult to conserve fuel, the two-stop strategy paid off; Wittmer crossed the finish line in P3, only 0.3sec from taking P2.

I was thrilled to grab pole position, the first in my IMSA career and fourth for the team!” said Yoshihara. “The car felt great, so it was amazing to prove I could still be fast around Road America.

P3 at Road America!” exclaimed Wittmer. “This is the result of incredible work ethic and execution by the entire team. Back-to-back podium finishes feel great, and Dai had a top-tier performance!
