FD: Round 8 – Title Fight

Formula DRIFT Round 8 – Title Fight took place October 12 – 13 in Irwindale, California.

Out of the gate, Dai qualified 3rd and had a BYE for his top 32 race. He faced Rookie of the Year Dirk Stratton in the top 16. During run 1, Stratton made contact with Dai, removing his rear fender. In run 2, Dai performed a nice, tight chase and won unanimously.

For the Great 8, Dai went up against Chelsea DeNofa, an aggressive competitor. During run 1, Dai executed a great lead run, but DeNofa plowed through the smoke to keep right on top Dai’s agile Subaru. During run 2, DeNofa attacked the track while Dai kept good form but lagged a bit behind. 2/3 judges felt the results were too close to call, requesting a “One More Time” (OMT).

During top 8 OMT 1, DeNofa continued his bold charges and got a little too close while chasing Dai, resulting in a contact. During OMT 2, Dai lagged out of the gate. Although DeNofa impacted the wall about halfway, allowing Dai to creep up, he couldn’t quite work his way into the ideal position. After slight hesitation, the judges called for DeNofa, ending Dai’s 2018 competition.
