Mooresville, N.C. — Shane Stewart and Larson Marks Racing team started the Midwest three-race weekend with a win at Crawford County Speedway in Denison, Iowa and ended it with a runner-up finish at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D.
In the middle of those two was a long rain-delayed then fog-shortened race at the famed Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway that left the team with a 20th-place finish.
On Friday, the World of Outlaws made their first appearance at Crawford County Speedway. Stewart qualified ninth in the new two-flight qualifying system and won his heat race to transfer into the dash. Stewart lined up fourth for the feature event and stayed inside the top-five throughout the race. With eight laps to go however, Stewart passed both second and third-running cars to take over the runner-up spot. And, with just two laps to go, surpassed Kerry Madsen to take the lead and earn the team’s fourth win of the season.
The following night, Stewart missed the qualifying inversion by just .001 seconds. After starting fifth in his heat race, Stewart failed to transfer into the feature event. A heavy rain shower caused a lengthy rain delay at the famed track. After two hours of rain and track work, the Last Chance Showdowns proceeded with Stewart unable to transfer and taking his first provisional of the season. When the feature started at just after 2 a.m., Stewart lined up 25th. He passed five cars before the immense fog that rolled in forced officials to shorten the race after just 15 laps.
On Sunday, in his first start at Huset’s Speedway since 2011, Stewart qualified fifth and finished third in his heat race to transfer into the night’s dash. Stewart lined up third for the feature event and took over the lead when the first and second-running cars tangled. Stewart managed to hold off Donny Schatz for six laps before falling to second where he finished.
The team remains second in the series point standings, 182 points behind defending champion Schatz.
